road trip: homeschool

O.k., I swear, after this I'm done posting ridiculous numbers of photos from our trip. 

We like to say we're learning all the time. And, we happen to live in a state with very free homeschooling laws where we aren't asked to report to anyone, at any time, what we are learning.  But, in case one day they ask...

 

We learned about epiphytes (especially spanish moss and air plants).

We spent lots of time exploring nature, learning the names of the plants, animals and the shells of southern Florida.

We journaled about what we saw, and heard and felt.

We worked on fire building, fire safety and campfire cooking skills.

We visited Thomas Edison's winter estate and toured his lab and the museum and his magnificent gardens.

We learned a bit of the funky history of Key West, and were fascinated by all the men hand rolling cigars on the street.

And we went a bit our of our way to stop in Montgomery, Alabama to visit the Rosa Parks museum because Iris is so interested and well, really we were right there (almost).  And then we read more books about Rosa, and talked about Rosa and thought about Rosa and answered loads of tough questions about civil rights.

And of course we played the license plate game-- of which we got 48 states, the District of Columbia and 3 Canadian Provinces!  (Deleware and Wyoming escaped us).

Oh, we do love field trips!
