A couple of days spent in one of our favorite Lake Superior spots and a stop over with sweet friends in the Cities left us both refreshed and exhausted.
So an unexpected cancellation of both Monday afternoon homeschool group and violin lesson left us with time to regroup and relax. Papa was off at an appointment so the girls and I made muffins and drank homegrown chamomile/rose tea by the fire while reading books. Then they played their favorite game in which they make a house for some of their little guys and talk to each other in British accents. Papa came home and went outside for a walk while we played in the barn and brushed the horses. Back inside, Iris washed dishes and set a fancy table, while we made supper and Mae made a fort under the coffee table where she trapped (I mean snuggled) with her kitten.
It was a sweet bit of a day in which we thought about, but did not talk about, cancer. It felt like a break. A breather. There was lightness and laughter. It felt like a building block on this path of healing. Sometimes you need just that.
