finding fall

You know fall is here when the Vernon County Fair rolls around. We head over to the fair mostly to see all the animals (because we just don't have enough around here, you know). But a ride or two on a scary looking horse is usually in order and of course, the midway with all the fried cheese curds can't be missed!

But the fair wasn't the only sign of fall. FROST fell on our garden this week (or at least the parts we hadn't covered with every old blanket, quilt, sheet and shower curtain we could find!) I came home from work one day to find the first cozy fire blazing and all the soft rugs and books gathered round.

Sweatshirts and hats came out of the bins. (She's taking orders on a mushroom for the Sandbox Cafe- special of the day anyone?)

And food was processed. Lots of food.

20 more pints of salsa. That makes over 50 pints for the year to add to the 45 quarts of whole tomatoes, plus frozen enchilada sauce and ratatouille. Last year was a dud for homegrown tomatoes in our garden, so of course, we went totally over board to make up for it this year. Need tomatoes anyone?

Sauerkraut and 7 jars of elderberry syrup. I love this recipe for syrup (and just in time as the sniffles and scratchy throats found us last night!).

Andy tried a new bread recipe this weekend too. Homemade whole grain bread from Feeding the Whole Family. We like it because it uses cooked whole grains instead of lots of flour. Soft, moist, easier to digest and a great way to use up leftover breakfast cereal!

Lentil vegetable soup, winter squash and apple crisp. A fine fall meal....

that didn't stick around for long!

What a week! And now we are getting rested because someone is about to turn five. FIVE?

Happy Monday everyone.
